Anyone who picks up a newspaper can see the significance of Martin Luther King.  Scarcely a day goes by without news of killings by extremist groups in the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere.

The beauty of Dr. King is that he chose a different but more powerful method – non violence.  What if Dr. King had thought the gravity of the situation demanded bombing and assassination?

Instead he took a page out of Gandhi’s book and and stuck to the non violent path.

This lets all of us appreciate Dr. King even more.  That he had the heart and soul – the wisdom and the judgment to work for justice for the oppressed — through means that were infinitely better than the other option.

We can all join in celebrating Dr. King for the methods enshrined in the “I have a dream” speech.  Which will endure in the hearts and minds of Americans as long as the republic stands.
